Is slate stone?
Yes.

Can slate burn?
No. It is a natural stone.
Are there certain slates better for different geographical locations?
Yes. Please let me know which location you are referring to and we can help with a recommendation of which slate we think would be best.
Are there hail ratings for slate?
Yes.
Class 3 hail is 1/4 inch to 3/8 slate. Class 4 is 3/8 and thicker, recommended by N.S.A.
Where does the slate come from and how long until I have my shipment in?
Since we only use premium materials from the finest sources worldwide, it all depends. Depending on the product you are purchasing, the turnaround time varies.

How do I know if I have quality slate?
To get an idea of the density, hold the slate on your finger tips in one hand and with the other, tap on it with your knuckle.
High quality slate will sound like a bell. Lower quality slate will almost sound hollow. That is an indication that the slate is soft and will damage easily.
How do I calculate my exposure?
You take the headlap of the slate and minus the length, then divide it by 2.

What nails should I use when doing the install?
I would recommend copper nails. Copper nails do not rust. After their initial color change, they do not corrode anymore. They are also much easier to cut (compared to stainless steel) when needing repairs done.
How many pieces per square?

What are pyrites?
Pyrites are specs of iron compressed into the slate during the metamorphic process. There are different stable pyrites, classed as T1. They have very little surface contact with air and water, so they rarely show rust.
